It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's a....Reindeer!


It was Christmas Eve evening and the snow was falling thickly. Faintly you could hear the bells ringing in the night sky signifying St. Nick had clocked in for his 24 hours. If it wasn’t the bells that gave it away it was the muffled sound of hoofs from his reindeer landing on the roof. The beautiful creatures that we have since the 1800s tied to Santa. They have meaning of their own, however. They aren’t just there to pull Santa’s sleigh contrary to popular belief.

The reindeer symbolizes many things. They symbolize wisdom, resourcefulness, cleverness, and gentleness. Thanks to their incredible ability to survive in the bitter cold they also are known for savvy knowledge and honored for their nobility.

If you have the reindeer as your spirit animal it’s to remind you to stay on track with your goals. The creature is pointing that the end of your emotional journey is approaching. You need to stay on the path you are following because you’re on the right track. However, you must steer clear of others’ drama. Focus on shining the light on yourself and your own journey. They also help to teach us to remain confident. Allow social group support while still retaining your personal power.

Reindeer have been around for a long time. They didn’t start out pulling the jolly old man's sleigh. In fact in early Norse myths they pulled Thor’s chariot. Roxhanitza, Slavic Winter Goddess, Latvian a sun goddess, and Beira also sun goddess were said to fly through the sky spreading fertility to those below. Reindeer were right there to pull them along. To the Nomadic people their horns were associated with the tree of life. They were sometimes depicted carrying the sun, birds, moon, or even sun in their antlers. While some just relied on them for the basics: food, clothing, and other supplies.

While yes the eight reindeer that pull Santa’s sleigh will always be magical. Don’t forget the true knowledge behind them. Reindeer encourage you to take that leap of faith. Believe all things are possible and you may even fly!
