The Sunflower

A sunflower. Such a simple; but powerful flower. You don’t necessarily think that when you see one. It’s true. So many people live them for their beauty. They grow tall standing above most flowers shining bright yellow. However, if you ask me I love them for their meaning, as well as the story behind them. A sunflower is the symbol for adoration, longevity, and even unwavering faith. Sunflowers position themselves to directly receive the sun's light.

They hold their head up high as worship mirroring the sun.

There are many stories behind how the flower came to be. The most popular one is based on Greek mythology.  A nymph named Clytie fell in love with the god Apollo. For a time he even loved her back. That is until he found a new woman to love. When Clytie found this out she was heartbroken, and told her father. In turn her father buried Apollo’s new lover alive. Once Apollo learned about what she had done in rage he turned her into a flower. Even in this form she couldn’t shake the undying love that she had towards Apollo. Clytie would spend her days looking up toward the sun watching him move through the sky. This is why sunflowers turn to face the sun.

A sunflower is not merely just a flower. It is a sign of unwavering faith and devotion. The next time you see it look not only at its beauty; but also keep in mind the meaning. They’ll be just as beautiful as before. If not more. Stand tall just like them, and continue through life mirroring them.
